Technology stack

"Thanks to the new data platform, we can automate our controlling and have access to up-to-date, reliable figures at all times. Transparency has improved enormously - and with it our decision-making quality."

Challenges of the customer

The fast-growing company was facing a typical challenge: important company key figures were maintained decentrally in Excel – with sometimes contradictory results. Incorrect data, long calculation times and a lack of transparency made project management, controlling and accounting difficult.

The management needed a consistent, central database for the analysis of profitability, capacity utilization and billing-relevant data – independent of the respective department. The aim was to increase analysis quality, minimize errors and automate reporting by setting up a company-wide platform.

Our approach

The project was implemented in an iterative approach together with the specialist departments – with the aim of delivering initial results quickly and creating a sustainable data architecture at the same time. Technical, procedural and organizational aspects were taken into account in equal measure.

Analysis & planning

The first step was a comprehensive analysis of the existing systems, interfaces and requirements. On this basis, a technical target image, data access rights and requirements for data up-to-dateness and quality were jointly defined.
1

Cross-departmental implementation

The implementation was carried out in an agile manner in small, department-specific groups (e.g. HR, Controlling, Accounting). Together with IT and Development, these groups developed customized solutions that went live in short sprints. Initial results were therefore visible early on and could be iteratively improved.

Introduction of a central data platform with Fabric

Microsoft Fabric was established as the core of the new reporting infrastructure - including automatic data connection and a standardized data model. This was supplemented by Power BI for self-service evaluations and Azure components for the interface connection.
3

Introduction of a data catalog & self-service BI

To improve data comprehensibility, a company-wide data catalog was created from the start of the project. This clearly defines all key figures, terms and calculations - e.g. billable rate - and creates a uniform basis for decision-making in all areas.
